Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is the more common choice for homeowners in our area, and for good reason. It typically lasts 20 to 40 years, holds up well against moisture, and needs very little upkeep beyond an occasional rinse. Its main weakness is temperature extremes: in very cold weather it can become brittle and crack on impact, and prolonged sun exposure can cause fading over time.

Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber cement siding is built from a mix of cement, sand, and cellulose fibers, and it's the more durable option overall. With proper maintenance it can last up to 50 years, and it resists fire, pests, and rot better than vinyl. The tradeoff is upkeep: fiber cement needs to be repainted and have its caulk touched up roughly every 10 to 15 years, and it's more prone to water absorption if that maintenance gets skipped.

Which Holds Up Better in Ohio?

Southwest Ohio sees real temperature swings between summer and winter, along with its share of humidity. Vinyl handles moisture well but can get brittle in a hard freeze. Fiber cement shrugs off temperature swings but needs its paint and caulk maintained to keep moisture out. Neither is a wrong choice, it comes down to whether you'd rather have a lower-maintenance material or a more durable one that asks for periodic upkeep.

If you want to install it and mostly forget about it, vinyl is the simpler path. If you're planning to stay in the home long-term and don't mind a repaint every decade or so, fiber cement will outlast it.
